Headpiece Assignment Titled “Endangered”: Studio

HEADPIECE FOR INTERGRATIVE STUDIO: ENDANGERED SPECIES

To begin my headpiece assignment I first decided what I wanted my hood to be based on. Something I feel very strongly about is animal rights since I am a very big animal lover. As mentioned in my sketchbook notes, in the recent years a lot of species are on the verge of being extinct and I feel that with this headpiece I can portray that story, specially for animals that have been caged and taken away from their habitats and been put into cages. Furthermore, the use of real fur in the fashion industry is something I am really against, therefore I felt that this studio project would be a good platform for me to convey how the use of faux fur has an effective look to it, without harming animals in the form of a hood/headpiece. I was very sure of my idea as soon as this project was assigned.

My process :

  • I made use of key rings (since I couldn’t find split rings) and manually joined 15 of them together for one chain, I made a total of three chains that I wanted to use for the front of the hood to symbolise being caged, but also making use of it as the “protection” part of the hood.
  • After this I worked on hand sewing the headpiece shut to give it its shape and to make it more animal like I left the back of it untouched.
  • I then attached the key rings to the headpiece to finish the piece off, using wire and intertwining it I connected the chain to the fabric.

Here is my Final Outcome :

Once I finished I photographed my suite mate wearing the headpiece.
