Figure/Ground Drawing and Imaging

The process of creating this newspaper collage ended up being very similar to the proceeding projects. Meaning, although it appears there are only four or so shapes, there is actually over 50 smaller shapes coming together to create an image. By placing smaller text newsprint at a completely vertical angel I was able to create the foreground with the rock formation. Then by placing larger, more spaced out newsprint at a slight angle, I was able to distinguish enough of a difference to create the sky. The sky in affect created a positive imprint of a further away rock formation/mountain. Then by using two have circles and cutting them down, I was lastly able t create the sun.

SIGNS and WONDERS

This is one of the first images that I was drawn to. When I was young I lived on a ranch in New Mexico and I’ve developed an aesthetic attraction to imagery like this. The metaphor I found is hidden in motherhood and the many sacrifices that must be made for you child. Even though you can see the mothers ribs she is still more then willing to nourish and feed her calf.

I relate to this image because of its multiple influences coming together to create a unique design. Similar to my own aesthetic this chair draws from Western influence with the cow hide leather. Yet, it remains modern and clean with a clear bauhaus influence. The chair resembles my past of living on a ranch with my life growing up in Chicago and living in New York City.

I was drawn to this image because of its contrast. A very straight forward, minimal building with an  A-Symmetric Spiral staircase going down the left side. The man made simplicity juxtaposed to the natural shape really stands out and creates an impact.

The Mercedes logo in itself is pretty simple and not too much meaning. However, as I’ve gotten older I started looking at this logo differently. It is an unfortunate reality that too many young black children grow up in a culture that the best way for them to make it out of their environment is to play sports, make music or participate in illegal activities. These three fallbacks are represented in the Logos three points. What the entire logo represents is powerful engineering, science, art and design, which are all options these kids have but aren’t exposed to or encouraged to learn about through media, stereotypes and systematic inequalities.

The playboy image can be metaphorical for a lot of reasons depending on the viewer. For me its an truthful  flag of the outdated idea of the American dream.

POSITIVE/NEGATIVE ILLUSTRATOR IMAGES

After scanning the newspaper collage onto illustrator I used the pen tool to outline the multiple shapes. This left me with around 25 unique shapes that I used the fill in tool to color all of them completely black. Then I began with my Black on White Cow image. By placing the black shapes into the negative areas surrounding the cow I was able to successfully sculpt out a recognizable image.

After completing the Black on White I started on the White on Black piece. By thinking of the background as the negative space, I was able to shape out an abstract bunny head.

For my final piece, I was feeling more comfortable with the technique so I decided to try something more intricate. The goal was to combine positive and negative aspects to create an ambiguous piece.  I was inspired by my Wes Lang sketch where he focuses on classic American tattoo style imagery.
