The NBA vs The NFL – Sports Culture in the Era of Division (Case Study)

This is a data visualization map I created in order to demonstrate how the 2016 U.S Election divided more than just the voters. After President Trump was elected he immediately forced both organizations to “pick a side”, this map tells the story of how one side leaned left on a more global and liberal basis, while the other focused on its home base and took a conservative stance. The NFL has for a long time been considered a symbol of American culture and patriotic strength. The players are covered in gear and wear helmets hiding their face, while military jets fly over head during the national anthem. On the under hand (as  John Branch pointed out in his article by the New York Times) in the NBA, every player is recognizable by their face, they wear tank tops and shorts and fans can sit right up on the court. The underlying culture of both sports has existed long before Trump. Yet, like so many other deeply rooted cultures, it has been brought to the surface in wake of Donald Trump.
