Bridge Project 2

During the process of curating our ideas for our intervention at Battery Park, we were deciding whether we should create several posters to let our audience learn about our theme or an interactive activity. Our ideas evolved as we were sketching, however, we knew what we want to focus on. We wanted to send the message to our audience, tourists and locals who visited the park, on how climate change is slowly affecting the park and New York City. Hopefully they would take action after visiting our intervention. We sketched out how both ideas would appear to be in the park.

After researching on how to tackle our intervention, we realized that the posters would overpower the activity and so we decided to stick to our first idea of the interactive puzzle. The main base of the puzzle would show the shape of battery park today while the actual puzzle pieces the audience would have to put together would be how battery park would be in the future. Additionally, we decided to only keep our interactive puzzle because we knew that the people who visited the park were mostly tourists. Therefore, they would not have as much time to stay for our intervention before visiting the Statue of Liberty, which they were mostly there for.

After visiting Battery Park for our intervention, we learned several things as a group and individually. First, there were many ways to improve our intervention. Utilizing posters would be helpful to allow the audience to learn what our puzzle was meant to say. Many of the people who visited our intervention questioned the meaning behind it. Another aspect we can improve on is creating a sign that would want the audience to visit our site without being intimidated. This is because many of people who passed our site quickly glanced or walked passed it. Although, we still had successes as a group. We were able to send the message of climate change to those who visited and what it will do to Battery Park and New York City. Additionally, we attracted several people around the park to join the interactive puzzle activity. Our piece was strong because we were able to attract people to our activity. However, I believe we would have more people learn about climate change and join if we included posters and had our puzzle larger in size.

In this project, I helped research on Battery Park. I also helped curate ideas for our intervention from the sketches to the mood board. After, I sketched out the shape of the puzzle on foam core. We then painted and cut out each piece. Lastly, visiting for the intervention to interview people who visited and people we encountered around the park. Additionally, I helped with the presentations we had to make.
