Midterm Evaluation

Based off of Project 1: Home Investigations, how have you made your space in New York a home?  Is it your home?  If you don’t consider it your home, how can you redefine it to be?  What needs to be there to make it a home?

Bringing different objects from home, the Philippines, have made my space in New York my home. Especially things my mom has given me which remind me of her. However, I still don’t consider New York to be my home. It’s different when you bring things from home to remind you of home rather considering it to be your home. I would consider New York to be my home if my family and friends were here. This is because I treasure my family and friends the most.

Based off of Project 2: The Stoop, The Sidewalk, The Subway, how do you and the people around you experience the city?  What makes the city great?  What could be improved?

Everyone has different opinions on the city depending on their experiences in it. What makes the city great is that it’s so fast paced and there’s always something to do. I noticed that I can always find something to do from visiting museums to parks. However, there are several things that can be improved. Firstly, subways can be more efficient and the streets can be cleaner. I also believe that the government should find better ways to help the homeless. Even though the subways can be improved by making it more efficient, living in New York City is one of the most convenient cities I’ve ever visited. I noticed this when I started living in Kerrey Hall. I noticed that I never had to take the subway to get my necessities. Everything I need is around me.

Based on all of your work, what might be needed in the future to make this city better?  What area might your focus on?  What would be your dream?

Based on all of my work, I noticed to make the city better, I would love to help with the trash system. Also, just making the city cleaner would improve the city a lot. This is especially seen by the subways. Additionally, I would love to help the homeless. Leaving my dorm everyday to go to Union Square to catch the train or just to go to class, I noticed the number of homeless I encounter. Helping them would be a dream to me.

Write three key observations you learned from your classmates about city and place. Name the classmate you learned this from. If you don’t know their name, ask them!

After looking at my classmates work, I learned and found several parts interesting. Jennifer Marcos created a video where she observes sounds in the bedroom. However, what I found most interesting is when she made the visuals what the sound looks like but is not what it actually is. For example, she heard sounds from her bedroom and made the visual a subway coming in even though it wasn’t it. Another work I found interesting is Christina Hurtado’s home move. She noted down everything she remembered that was in her kitchen. When she came back she wrote down everything she missed. This shows that we think we remember everything when we don’t. We only remember the things that are usually important to us. Jennifer Liu made a pie chart on her observations at the subway station. She noticed what people usually purchase for their metro cards. From this she observed that people usually pay for the cheapest option even though the monthly options would be better because of the free rides. However, because of paychecks being too low, people can’t afford to pay for more.
