Intro to Fashion Studies 9/12

Christopher Breward/Aphorisms

Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold

I definitely agree and can relate to this aphorism. I work in various mediums and each seems as personal as the other. These include music, fashion design, painting, or various kinds of writing. What I like most about fashion design is that I feel that I can express and capture how I am feeling in or about a moment or time, past, present, or future. One of my favorite parts of the design process is drawing references from the past and making them new again, or re-creating a memory in a new and innovative way.

“Fashion moves in space and time”

I also agree with this aphorism. I like how Breward suggests that fashion is an ever-changing notion. It refers to the space around it and responds to what is happening at the time. Fashion represents what the Zeitgeist is of a specific moment, or captures the essence of a time. It takes a stance on and draws information from political, social, and economical conditions. For example, Chanel’s SS15 show was a staged feminist protest. Walter Van Beirendonck’s AW15 show responded to recent acts of terrorism, one model wearing a shirt with the applique “Stop Terrorizing Our World.” Trends reflect the spirit of a moment in time. We either dress to reflect the time that we are in, or reference a time of the past or future.
