1.

I’m Hazuki Uno who studies Illustration at Parsons School of Design. My nationality is Japanese, but I have only lived there for five years of my life. Since when I was small, I moved around the world. I have lived in places such as Mexico, Switzerland, and Germany and currently I live in New York. I started to have interest in art since I was small. I realized I really liked to draw when I had to draw when I was in kindergarten. One day my friend introduced me a manga from Japan which opened my interest in comics and illustrations.

2.

Many of my works have strong connection with myself.  Mixture of the experiences that I gained by interacting with people from different cultures, exploring different countries and my own culture are my biggest inspiration for my works. In my works I often use multiple colors, which defines my style. I also like to use ‘flower’ as an inspiration and subject for my work, because flower is one of the object, which can express what I want to communicate to the viewer.

3.

Many of my works are inspired by my experience of living in different places. Also because of this experience, I often face identity crisis. For instance, I have made series of portraits which represents the place I lived. Also I made a comic, which tells story about having language barriers.

When I work on a project, I have to get my inspirations and mood board before I come up with my idea. Once I get my idea, I sketch. Then I start to work on my final piece. Some of the medium I use often is ink, watercolor, pen and digital media. My sketchbook is one of the things I need when making my work.

I create my work to share what I experienced. Also I usually don’t express myself that often, therefore by creating art I could express myself.

6.

I do brief research when I’m gathering idea for my work. It is one of the important steps in my process of creation. I usually start researching by what I am interested in or what I like to do. I usually gather the information based on my interest.

7.

I will probably keep using my experience and my background as my inspiration but I would like to use that to help other people in someway. My goal is to create something that is practical, something that helps others. This semester I am going to apply for communication design minor so that I could learn different ways to communicate through visuals.
