Space and Materiality : Project 1.2

Shape 1: 18 gauge wire wrapped with 24 gauge wire

The visual component is interesting in this piece, not only because of the dynamics of the wire, but because of the shadows that it casts when mounted on the wall. Even sitting by itself, the wire casts a unique shadow. The touch component is present in the rigid connection of the 22 gauge wire, and the smooth lines that the are made from the 18 gauge wire. I debated making connections through the faces with the wire, but I ended up liking the idea of having it be like a skeleton. I believe that keeping this form as a skeleton allows the eye to deconstruct the form, and the second piece highlights how it looks with the next layer on it.

Shape 2: Fabric and watered down Elmer’s Glue

Making the form with the fabric lead to many potential ways engage the senses with this material. First off, the visual component of the piece plays into the overall form because, depending on how the light hits it, the form can appear either opaque or somewhat translucent. This form also fools the eye because when one first sees the piece, it appears to be soft and light, whereas when one actually touches it, it is in fact quite stiff and a bit rough – this is where touch comes into play. I incorporated the sense of smell by spraying it with my one of my favorite perfumes, Jour d’Hermes, because I thought it might retain the smell given the qualities of fabric.
