Studio 2: Installation Final

Relationship Between the Real and that which is Feared:

Building off of our initial idea of disease-ridden limbs, we decided to narrow down one disease, in particular, to focus on: Ebola. Since bats are one of the known carriers of this disease, we decided to create an immersive cave installation featuring bats, stalactites, and a giant ebola virus. There are two bats: a more traditional black bat contrasted with a white anthropomorphic “bat”. The installation is experienced in dim lighting with the soundscape of a cave playing throughout. The entire installation was created with fabricated soft-structures using various fabrics and polyfill.

Relationship Between Death and Life:

For our installation, we want to focus on using fabric throughout the piece. Form this idea we thought of creating anthropomorphic limbs from white fabric. The limbs would fill up the room, hanging from the ceiling. We then wanted to add interest to the limbs by painting diseases on the fabric in reds. We are now thinking of using not only human limbs but animals as well to symbolize death or decay. To balance this out we would have symbols of life such as moths, mushrooms and ivy. To also balance out the colors, the “life” objects would be made from a warm yellow fabric. As for the room itself, we could make a sewn box that can fit inside the room and be pinned to the walls. The sides of the room would be covered in a greyish blue fabric, while the floor would be a dark red and the ceiling white.
