Space/Materiality Mini Project
For my Space/Materiality mini project, I made a tank top, based on a tank top I took apart, out of Urban Outfitters bags. I used a pattern to translate the pieces from the tank top which I had taken apart into a plan to create the new garment.
3 things I learned in this process:
1.) I learned to to make and use a pattern in the garment-making process.
2.) I learned the difficultly of sewing the trim around a round surface like the trim on the top of my tank top. I learned that the sewing machine is likely to try to sew through the thinner areas of material and that when showing a trim you must manipulate the material so that the thicker side passes under the needle.
3.) I was surprised by how tricky and tedious undoing the seems was. I found that you must be very careful when using a seem ripper not to rip through the actual fabric.
1 previous skill I used:
The headpiece project gave me experience with sewing around round forms, which proved to be much more challenging than sewing in straight lines.
My favorite mini project out of all the ones in class was probably Diego’s. I liked that he took the risk of using fused trash bags, something he hadn’t tried before, and pulled it off well. He chose a more challenging garment (a collared vest) than many of us did and his sewing work was neat and clean.
