Response Writing-Yuken Teruya

In this piece by Yuken Teruya, there is a white Mcdonald’s bag depicted. The bad is White and sideways, with a yellow ‘m’ with a red background overshadowed by green-grey mass or blob. On the right hand side of the bag, There is yellow horizontal ‘m’ and a red ‘USA’ with a red olympic symbol underneath. At the top of the bag, there seems to be an unseen source of light, perhaps a hole that the sunlight is coming through. Light is scattered throughout the bag. From the bottom of the bag, there a tree plated. The branches seem to be periwinkle-blue, and when under shadows, a deep violet. The leaves on the tree are a mixture of red, orange, and yellow. The tree is under the green-grey mass.

In the piece described above, I have a number of theories of what the meaning could be. For starters, I think that the piece is supposed to show a glimpse of our culture and our society’s disposable nature. I think that the piece is supposed to draw attention to depleted natural resources. At the same time, I think that it says a lot about man kind.  Two things, such as nature and a paper bag, that are on two opposite sides of a spectrum, can peacefully coexist. The same idea could go for people. I think that it’s interesting that there are olympic symbols on the bag, because the idea of the olympics kind of coexists with the idea i’m getting from the overall piece; that different groups can come together and participate in something great as a unit.
