Project Title: Out with the new, in with the old: Vintage Revamped
Concept Proposal: The community I was initially interested in pursuing was the thrifting community. I chose to work with this community specifically, because I myself am an avid thrifter. I enjoy the thrill of searching through racks and racks of clothes, eventually finding that diamond in the rough. I enjoy finding a bland item, and reworking it in a way that makes it more beautiful. Many people however, especially at this school, seem hesitant to join the thrifting community. The reasons for this vary; because the clothes are old, dirty, cheap-looking, unfashionable, it’s too much work. This stigma of the clothes just all around not being good enough needs to end. When I asked people about what they thought of thrifting shopping, none of the people initially thought of the many benefits that it has to offer, not just for one person, but for a much larger spectrum. Reusing old clothing is economical, socially acceptable, politically acceptable, environmentally friendly and it generally has a positive cache, overall a sustainable fashion option. With this in mind, for my project I wanted to make a how-to book on how rework and even repurpose clothing from thrift stores, but also clothing in general, to help alleviate this idea that the only thing thats acceptable is what’s new. I plan to do this by giving step by step instructions on how to sew and alter clothing in ways that I find to be more appealing, and even adding embellishment, by using items to decorate such as rhinestones, sew on patches, and combining different assorted pieces of clothing. This will be something like a pamphlet, that i hope to get to the student community. By doing this, I hope to bring more credibility and popularity to the thrifting community and hopefully make the New School a more aware and sustainable fashion community.
Budget: My budget for this project would be one hundred and fifty dollars. I will be shopping with the project concept in mind, only using clothing from thrift stores, and items that I find to be reasonably priced to add decor. The part that I want to spend the most money is the actual booklet

Artist Statement: I am a fine artist, my main medium being in assorted paints. I enjoy studying people, their mannerisms and habits, good and bad. In all of my work, not just my paintings, my goal is to make people aware. I am fascinated with the human mind, often addressing in my work human emotion. This also comes from my background in psychology, which I am double majoring in along with fine arts. I am fascinated with color theory and artists such as Lucian Freud, color and contrast to a discomforting, almost grotesque degree, in order to examine the relationship between an artist and a model, and the psychology of humans. My mission is to create art that provokes feeling and change.
