Sustainable Systems – Kombucha Leather Project

I started the Kombucha leather project two weeks later than originally intended. The beginning making process, though the instructions were clear, it was a bit of a hassle. It took me approximately 20-30 minutes to fully set the liquid out for the SCOBY to feed on. I tried my best to be precise with my measurements as per said on the instructions but I believe I added too much water to the bin. Afterward, I stored the kombucha experiment in a dark corner in my basement; letting life continue itself (I’m not too sure about the temperature, but I’m going to estimate it was stored in 58-65 degrees Fahrenheit).

The end result was pretty cool and disappointing. It was cool because when I opened the lid from the bin, I saw a thin film of leather forming at the top of the bin. But at the same time, I was disappointed because the leather hasn’t grown to 1/2” yet; so it wasn’t ready to harvest just yet. I anticipated that the kombucha may have been a little less ready when it was time to harvest, but I didn’t expect it to be paper thin. Thus, I’m going to continue with the experiment and see what happens if I leave the SCOBY in for longer.
