LP 5 What is Fashion?

To me, fashion is very personal. Different people can have very different opinion toward fashion. I never thought fashion is nothing more than the dresses and coats with baffling designs for those shows in Milan, Paris and London. It can be as simple as a plastic sandal to a complicatedly colored lace coat. Much as I may pride in myself that I have watched and even attended so many shows, I still did not have too much idea of what can be defined as fashion.
Honestly speaking, even now, it is a mystery to me. Yet, the readings in the class gave me a rough outline of what fashion might be: an art cultivated by the unprecedented ideas of different people.
No matter it is really is, fashion as an indivisible element in design will accompany me for the rest of my career, and I don’t mind further exploring it along my growth. The most precious knowledge this class has given me is the tool of exploration in fashion. As Heike Jenss writes in her work, “Research as practice: fashioning method”, “locating” fashion and find what can be fashionable in a way that fashion helps to create the visual affiliation with beauty in the world.
Yet, there is still a very long way for me to go. A old saying is that the more you learn, less you know. I felt how shallow I am when I said beauty. Perhaps, by learning more deeply about fashion, I will better understand what beauty is.
