LP Week 3/ Fabric Manipulation Submission & Reflection

My first object is a lighter. I burned some of the fabrics and made them look like ashes from the burning. My inspiration is that lighter is a tool to destroy and I used the residues to represent the danger of a lighter.

My second object is a cigarette. I lit a cigarette and burned the square into many holes. And then I put some of the cigarette’s ashes along the wholes and made the square look messy and dirty. My inspiration of this is to represent a smoker’s lung which is sick and not looking good.

My third object is a wine bottle. I used real wine drops and painted into a bottle. Then I sewed out the outline of the bottle to make it more obvious. I inspired by the wine colors and I just wanted to recreate the shape of the bottle with the wine stain showing.

My fourth object is a pair of glasses. I sewed a pair of glasses as the base of the square with straight lines on the glasses. That means when I am wearing glasses, I see the world perfectly clear. And then I put up some fabric strips on top of the square which means when I am not wearing glasses, the world is no longer clear for me.

My fifth object is eye mask. I sewed two fabrics that are different sizes together. Then I made two sides into elastic tape shape in order to make it look like a eye mask. I wanted to recreate the shape of the eye mask again because I can’t sleep without it.

My last object is a keyboard. I love playing online games and there are eight main characters that I use in every day. I only sewed those eight characters in my keyboard because they are super important to me. My inspiration is my interests in online games.

In the readings, the Russian family story which tells about how they support the family by making their own stuffs relates to my objects. First, when the aunt said that everything is as beautiful as each other no matter how it is made. This relates to my first object, the lighter. I think lighter destroys things. But the burning ashes collage is beautiful in a sad way. And I can only get this after lighting my lighter and burn the fabric. It fits what the aunt had said in the readings that everything has its own pretty. And I think that human made objects with skills such as sewing from a machine are as pretty as the “natural” made like the process of burning.
