Project Statement

For my project, I created a mask in the shape of a bird’s head. First I created a wire frame, then layered plastic bags, using red thread to connect them. My project is addressing the issue of plastic waste pollution. Our waste impacts the lives of wildlife. I remember always seeing images of deceased birds and fish with their bellies cut open and filled with trash they had consumed. Additionally, this object addresses the trash islands floating in the oceans. I wanted the wearer of the mask to sympathize with the animals that live in our waste, blinded by the trash and almost becoming the trash. The wearer is blinded by the trash, the way a fish or a bird is engulfed by our waste. From this project, I was able to further learn and explore materials and how to combine them successfully.
