“M Train” Patti Smith

“M train” Patti Smith

It’s a memoir written in 2005 which  discloses Patti Smith’s secrets and weakness. She tells a story that is in the same time compelling and intriguing. It conveys how people react to losses and chances they meet during life.  This time she takes us for a intellectual however at the same time very personal journey. The chapters of “M Train” are like magic lantern slides, jumping, between the present and the past, and from subject to subject.  She increasingly began to capture and memorialise moments from her life in photos and words, “wherever she goes she is haunted by memories of Fred.”  Throughout this book a word “ loss” comes up to my mind very often. Her husband – lost.  Her favorite coat — lost. Her favorite Murakami book — left in an airport bathroom. Her favorite camera — left on a beach. Her favorite neighborhood cafe — closed.

Even though there are so many sad stories she always ends them with a hint of positive conclusion. She, as an artist, creates “talismanic souvenirs of the past.”
