Final Paper Image Proposals

Pin Up model and performer of the early 20th cent., Lottie Graves. This image is relevant to the history of fashion because it expresses the narrative of Black women and their limited forms of representation in the arts, culture, and fashion media. Simultaneously, this image touches on the era’s sentiment that openly expressed sexuality through fashion and art, even if this sentiment was marked by the fetishization of Black women artists. This is told by the element of clothing that the model is wearing (and not wearing) and the westernized take on Caribbean adornment.

Cover Pages of Ebony Magazine in the 1960s. This image is meaningful in fashion history as it shows a media company that strove to provide representations of Black people in upper and middle class America. As a lifestyle magazine, luxury and class is communicated through fashion and styling. The image layout includes a few of Ebony magazine covers depicting working Black women and original fashion illustrations inspired by the styles done by me.
