Christopher Breward’s Aphorisms from his Foreword to Fashion Studies

  1. The forth aphorism talks about the movement of fashion through space and time and the establishment of connections between various subjects. Yes, I agree with this aphorism because I believe from being inspired by vintage designs to being able to predict what is going to rule the fashion industry in the future, fashion is not limited fabric. But it indulges with complex processes that include the use of mathematics and even science in the case of wearable technological goods. Thereby directly and indirectly uniting different cultures and subjects like art and science.

  1. The Fifth aphorism describes fashion as gossip. It tends to form rumors and inform the people who are a part of the cycle of gossip about the latest controversies. I agree with the fact that gossip is a very powerful tool and that it cannot be underestimated but I disagree with this aphorism as fashion is not mere gossip. Fashion is a very broad term and though gossip has a major impact on the fashion industry it cannot be defined as gossip. In my opinion fashion that does not consist of an exact definition but is open to interpretation and at the same time it consists of the ability to communicate thoughts, cultures, societal laws and a lot more.
