Progress Update 2.5

My main goals for this week were:

• sketch gallery setups which show video recordings of the home installations

• try different audio options

• redo the installation and film from more angles (e.g. window open, 3 walls)

Installation vs. Documentation

One of the main questions I have to decide on is how to install my work; either as an installation recreating the home setup or as video recordings of my home installation(s). While the recreations might be more immersive experiences, I think recordings are more sound from a conceptual standpoint since the location within a bed or living room is essential and would be lost in the context of a gallery (as a public, higher resource facility without some of the restrictions). For the recordings, there is still a lot of considerations to be made: projector(s) or screen(s)? How many? Should it be one static video or several cuts from different angles? There is also the possibility to bring some installation elements into the space, e.g. by having a sofa to sit on and recreating one of the light effects. Another idea would be to recreate the room through video, by shooting 3 videos of the 3 bedroom walls and then projecting them on 3 walls within the exhibition space.

I decided to explore 3 different variations:

• simple: one projection, sofa

• two channel: screen/projector,  standing

• video recreation:  3 cameras + 3 projections

Audio

For the sound, I tried 3 different options: waves, underwater sound and whale sounds. Out of the three, I prefer the whale sounds because they were the most interesting and calming for me and also fit the whale footage.
