Spring 2021: Week 7 – Updates

For this week,

  • Concept: wrote a short and long pitch for the concept.
  • Branding updates: made correspond the colors of the social media logos to the color of the candies.  Ferrero Rocher for Facebook, Caramels for Instagram, and Bonbon Gomme for Whatsapp.
  • Pyramid updates: formatted the captions the way I want them to be in the exhibition space.
  • Installation updates: Developed two versions.

Version no. 1 specific to the performance of cutting candies in the exhibition space. The installation looks pretty similar to the one I showed two weeks ago, except that I had to research what production companies offer and the dimensions of their products for the printing of the pyramids. I found interesting to print the pyramids on cardboard panels for advertising (H: 1.5 meters W: 1 meter) , or kakemono roll ups (W: 85 cm H: 2 meters), or on posters  hanging from the ceiling since we can’t hang stuff on the walls (W: 1 meter, H: 2 meters). Instead of having candy piles I would have the candies displayed in jars (with a cardboard support inside to spend less money on candies) since they won’t hold around a cardboard pyramid like I tried last week.

In Version no. 2 , the performance is replaced by a pegboard structure displaying on hooks candy bags containing the social media consumption of the 11 exhibiting AMT artists. I chose this type of structure because the candy bags won’t stand on their own on a flat surface. The conversion app would be accessible from an iPad placed on a plinth in front of the pyramids. It’s a way of preserving the personalized experience of the work I had in version 1. The viewers would enter their consumption, take a photo of their results, and try to cut candies at home. I was thinking of also including a QR code next to to the iPad, in case there are people who wouldn’t touch the iPad screen because of COVID.

  • Sticker label updates: For the first version of the work, I’m hesitating between two labels. The first one only showing the statement “getting back what you have given”, and the second one showing the statement with the nutrition facts. I feel that having only the statement would be enough. For the second version, the sticker label shows the name of the users, the amount of time they spend on each platforms with the candies they generated for each, and the total price at the bottom.
  • Predictable areas of critique: my first area of critique would probably be the concept, the jury might ask why I am using candies. This is why I’m going to precise during the presentation that candies operate as a metaphor for our happiness being robbed away from us by social media companies, and I’m also going to say that the candies stand for the time we crave to spend on social media but at the same time don’t, because it’s bad for our health. My second area of critique would probably be the installation, but I don’t know exactly what.
