Exhibition Setup

Screens

I started out with trying different screen / projection setups in my own room, experimenting with one or two screens and projections at different sizes. I found that I preferred one screen / projection over having two channels; especially when they were placed on different walls (opposite or corner). Out of all the options I tried, I liked large projections (around 3 – 4 meters wide). At this size, you get a sense of immersiveness and scale (the room is around 4.5m wide) while still looking in from the outside. To me, this created a better sense of isolation and emptiness within the room compared to being immersed in it.

Furniture

In addition to the projection, I want a piece of furniture to sit on while watching the film. I think this will create more of the calm and relaxing atmosphere I want for people to view my work. A couch would probably fit best, matching with the home setting in the film and adding some kind of DIY element.

Placement

The most important factors for my work are:

  • space – a wall of 3.5m or wider with enough space in front of it to place the projector and seating funrniture
  • darkness – needs to be a fairly dark space for the projection to show well, so closeby windows will need to be darkened
  • noise isolation – viewers should be immersed in the sound, hearing the silence and details in the audio is very important in this piece, so it should be in a silent surrounding.
