The world war 1 played a major role in the emergence of women’s rights movements and a change in gender roles. As men went off to fight in the war , women were asked to start working. This was the first time wherein women were encouraged to be independent, they became the heads of their households. Hem lengths rose , clothing became simpler and they allowed for more movement. Women were also allowed to wear pants to work. As the war ended and the men returned , they tried to push women back into the houses holds and resume their “ proper duties”. Many women, who’d been independent during the war refused to return to their previous lives and duties. This war set the motion for the waves of feminism and women wearing what men would traditionally wear like shirts, bifurcated outer garments, clothing wherein ankles can be seen.
