Bridge 5 Reflection

My design project topic “Cinderella” is one source of my Seminar class’s research. My research on Social Anxiety Disorder gave me an understanding of patients’ suffering and struggle. When I made the storyboard for Cinderella, I knew which part of the plots could be changed to avoid misleading the children. The research helped me learn about children’s need.

I was interested in Disney princess films when I started my research. I noticed that there isn’t a lot of interaction between a princess and other human characters. At first, I focused on the animal characters around protagonists in The Little Mermaid and Cinderella. Therefore, my design project was about Cinderella’s animal friends. As I researched more, I eliminated The Little Mermaid and focused only on Cinderella. Instead of analyzing Cinderella’s relation with animals, I shifted it to why Cinderella didn’t have enough interaction with other human characters. Based on this curiosity, I changed my Studio project to a storyboard that made Cinderella’s stepsisters become her friends. During my discussion with Tamar, I figured out that trust is key in forming human relationships. It helped me in building a bond between SAD and Cinderella in my paper.

If I could continue my research, I would look for more real cases about Social Anxiety Disorder in children. I should add more sources about the psychology of children patients that is related to people’s trust and analyze them. A patient’s first perspective narrative of his thoughts will be more powerful. Also, I should make my research progress more organized. When I finalized my essay, I spent a lot of time figuring out where the content I used came from, because the notes I took were messy. Besides that, I needed a more creative and attractive title. My title now is too ordinary so that readers may easily ignore it. If I could continue my design project, I would expand the storyboard into 30 drawings or even more. For now, I only have 19 drawings, so plots between the scenes I draw are not clear. And the storyboard emphasizes Cinderella’s stepsisters’ perspectives. I could add Cinderella’s story that parallels with the stepsisters’ to show Cinderella’s psychology. For example, when her stepsisters were busing helping the animals make ball gown for Cinderella, she was disappointed and busy cleaning.
