Final Project Proposal

Project Update

1) What is your project idea and why do you want to make it? Describe how this design/object/idea will specifically help YOU (make sure it is designed for you, not someone else, or an anonymous user) be more resilient and navigate environmental change over the next 50 years.

This garment is supposed to wear at home and backward. The hoodie is at the front and is larger than a usual hoodie. It forces me to sit straight and don’t curl my spine all the time. Unless necessarily, I won’t wear it to the outside. It’s an out layer pajama that I can wear it outside of all shape of clothes. No matter I wear a sleeping pajama or clothes I plan to wear it at the outside, I can put on this hoodie as a protector. In summer, it keeps me warm in an air-conditioned room. In winter, although it’s very cold, there is always heater in the room. However, it’s not hot enough is I just wear summer wear. I could wear less clothes inside of this hoodie and still move freely.

20s-30s I use it as a snack holder. It allows me to set my snacks closer to my mouth, so I don’t drop the crumbs on the table while I have another hand working on the laptop or something else.

40s-50s I start to be less aware of my daily life. This is one thing I notice from my parents. In their ages, their life has already been pretty stable. There is less challenge in their daily life, so they are very familiar with everything around them. Then they start to have those mistakes (They even can’t be called as mistakes, but) they never had before. Also, I’m a very unorganized person. Therefore, I can put a note pad (or any kind of memo we will use in the future) in the hoodie and note down my life. I am probably busy at work all the time, so I can put the tools I may need in my work in the hoodie. I’m too busy taking care of my health, so I put supplements in it.

60s-70s I keep being more forgetful, so I put in tv remote, emergency medicine and phone (or the kind of communication equipment we use in the future)in it. It will be too much work to dress up and go out if I just want to go out for a short time, for example, grocery shopping or pick up my package at the concierge. I can wear this big hoodie that covers my face and go out comfortably.

Details:

In order for it to be easily cleaned, The lining of the hoodie will be attached with a line of buttons underneath the hem.

Like an ordinary hoodie, there will be strings in the hoodie so that it could adjust the size. The ribbed cuff is removable so that easily to be washed, because the cuff is more easily to be dirty. The garment is closed with a zipper as usual when it is wore frontward. There will be an extra big button in the middle. It helps hold the garment on body when it is wore backward. It is at the level where people at any age can bend their arms to the back and reach it

2) Describe your work plan for the next month.

10/31-11/7  Swatch for fashion fabric, lining, strings and the button.

11/8-11/14 Finish the pattern and have the fabrics ready

11/15-11/21 Sewing 50% of the garment (try to finish all the sewing)

11/22-11/29 Finish sewing and make final adjustment

3) How will you source materials?

I will go to the healthy material lab first and see if there is any materials that is similar to knit fabric for hoodie. At the same time I will go to the fashion district to look for back up.

4) How does your project specifically encourage resiliency or use resilient materials?

This project is more social resilient than material resilient. The life style of using my brain to work and mouth to eat at the same time is the best working style I find for me now. And I don’t like change. As I get aged, I will keep this habit. Generally, have things I need within reach keeps me secure.

5) How will it be repaired?

The lining, which is the part that is most easily to break, can be replaced with new lining. The body part of the hoodie can be patches and make the whole garment look more loungewear style.

New York Times

1) What was the most interesting visual that you found (photograph, diagram etc.)and why was it so powerful to you? Include the image and the link in your post.

I kept looking at the animation of pine island glacier from 2014 to 2017. We may think that deglaciation is a really slow process in the scale of Earth, but when I actually look at one piece of glacier in a period of four years. It is fast. It’s faster than I imagine. The data and the number are very powerful. I automatically recall those disaster films like The Day After Tomorrow, Titanic, etc.

2) Given what you learned in this article, how different do you think the planet be 50 years from now?

Supposedly, the deglaciation will accelerate in the future 50 years. Although water will help cool down the weather, it cannot catch up with the speed of temperature rise. Therefore, the temperature will continue to rise. The precipitation will increase.

3) In what ways do you think these realities will impact your work and life 50 years from now?

The first thing I think about is air-conditioner. In a lot of the public buildings, the ac is on 24/7. The climate would be more extreme in the future. People will never get rid of ac. Once some thing become necessary , it becomes the weakness of human beings. My life and work will have too much to worry about. If some really subtle thing is missing, my life will be affected.

4) How might your Long Life Design final project address, acknowledge and/or work with such climate related changes over the next 50 years?

My design is a garment. One thing I consider about is the temperature of the environment I am in when I wear the garment. Because of the temperature difference between a ac room and the outside. I think about my own case in summer but sitting in a freezing room, or in the winter feeling hot when ac is on, cold but if turn it off. My design has to fit in any kind of weather.
