UN and Final Projects works-in-progress

Reflection:

Dixon’s design with IKEA is related to my work in the aspect of longevity, especially the final project. People have prejudice on IKEA product. They are cheap so can be replaced quickly. Sometimes I doubt that this is also IKEA’s design intention. However, Dixon’s design upgrades IKEA product. He challenged the idea that cheap things don’t last long. As materialism controls people’s life, we have excessive produces design that ends up being garbage. Designers sometimes forget that the purpose of design should be making our life better, instead of a competition of only sales volume.

1) What did you think of your visit to the UN? Which speaker did you find the most inspiring and why? What did you learn? What did it feel like to be inside the UN to hear these conversations?

This visit for me is very reminiscent. I have been to the UN six years ago. This trip reminds me of the photographs about famine at that time in the hall. Besides the speakers, the Q&A section to the speakers from Denmark. I don’t remember what the exact question was, but their answer left me strong impact: Denmark has no other choice but transferring into a more sustainable country. I like this honest but irresistible explanation. It is true that people don’t actually notice the consequence until things happen. I learn a kind of attitude from them. It’s not a shame to admitted that being sustainable is a surrender to reality. On the contrary, it is the most simple but effective motif. To achieve some thing or accept some idea, a person can only be convinced by himself. I feel very calm while sitting inside the UN. The design of the room create a very peaceful atmosphere so that people can calm down and think. I really appreciate the moment when it was about to start, the room became quite in three seconds. It was like someone  was controlling the knob.

2) Before class next week, please post 2-3 photos of your final project in-progress (material samples, constructions etc.) along with a draft of either your systems map or your resiliency/repair story

I used this garment as a pattern reference.

I enlarge the back side of the hoodie.

System Map

Fashion fabric, Zipper, String in the hoodie

The degree of self-lubrication and sturdiness of Delrin zippers is far better than an equivalent size of coil zipper.
