Grace Paley’s “Traveling” Reflection

For Paley to have experienced segregation for the first time at the age of twenty seems unlikely; Jim Crow Laws have been around before she was even born. Surely she must have experienced antisemitism at some points in her life, however her status of a stranger is not what allowed her to be able to resist the injustices of segregation. Despite being a Jewish immigrant, she is still able to use her privileges as a white person to withstand any negative repercussions from the other white passengers on the bus. Paley understood her status, and used it to be able to take care of a baby whose mother was not even able to sit down.
