Silhouettes

For my silhouette project, I chose my best friend Emma as my subject. Over the labor day weekend, Emma and I both headed home to the Poconos. I took multiple photos of her in my bedroom, borrowing my brother’s lamp to physically adjust lighting. I then uploaded the photos onto Illustrator and changed the threshold. I chose Illustrator because it comes out in cleaner lines that makes it easier for me to cut later.

Then, I took this project to be a little experimental with media. I had all this unused paint and multiple types of paper, so my five portraits are all mixed media. I mainly used acrylic paints for colored backgrounds. There are two made with soft pastels, and my favorite is just permanent marker on Duralar clear .003 film.

Emma, to me, means strength. Having known each other since we were 6 years old, and basically next door neighbors, we virtually grew up together. I know every single thing she has had to go through, and in these recent years, it progressively gets more complicated. However despite all of her obstacles, she remains the strongest, bravest, and optimistic person I know.
