I’m Having an Identity Crisis!

As a media campaigner for our museum, I took leadership in creating the branding and image for our museum of counterculture. We made an instagram page that will primarily be managed by me and Eshita, and we are planning to create a logo that will be translated across supplemental items such as: buttons, totes, stickers, and the design on the ticket stubs which ultimately serves as a souvenir for visitors.

For my personal piece that will be exhibited in our museum, I want to create a suffocating space that is a reflection of my inner turmoil with identity. Playing with the idea of multiple subcultures and how they coexist with each other, I find myself inspired and attracted by multiple groups. There are cultures I wish I grew up in, cultures I would simply admire afar, and cultures I wish I could ‘fit in’ to. The amalgamation of all these cases results into me, not really belonging to any culture besides the normcore culture in order to keep myself afloat until I find out where I can insert myself.  IMG_6082-1w61r9o

This piece was inspired by the new wave of advertisements via street art around New York City featured on temporary construction walls. The triptych displays a series of ads that emit a suffocating atmosphere in which impressionable youth of America is surrounded by multiple subcultures, and are pressured to fit into a category. What happens when you refuse to decide quick enough?

My part of the project is heavily based on personal observations, but references would be the accounts I follow on image based media platforms.

Project materials, so far: original indonesian batik/adobe photoshop/jpeg images/
