Bridge 1 – Part I

Reflection

The purpose of this assignment was to unite our understanding of the principles of art and design with several images that represent us. These images were self-selected, some of which were taken from the MoMA and some of which were taken ourselves. It’s always fascinating to unpack an image, despite the origin, source, or even the medium. The act of curation itself is already delicate – and when placed under the guise of our chosen themes, in this case is identity, it can lead to a very deep investigation of self.

I learned that it’s hard defining certain principles of art when certain things may not be “posed” as art. For example, our self-selected photos taking from the streets of New York may not have been created under the lens of a photographer. One may not particularly consider balance or contrast or composition, however in mine I tried to do so. Similarly, understanding the principles of art and design and applying them to all pieces of art differ because of different mediums. For example, balance may not been as important in a portrait as it would be in an abstract piece.

It’s important because art is very subjective – my teacher once told me that “art can be anything depending on its inflection”. So anything could be considered art; in my opinion, beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder. So through varying pieces of art, we were asked to understand the principles of art and design through different kinds of mediums.
