LET’S GET DIGITAL

Description & process

This assignment began with a line drawing from three objects. This was probably the hardest part for me, as I struggle with conventional mediums. However, it was interesting to note all of the small details and shadows that I normally wouldn’t notice unless I was actively trying to capture them down.

The piece was created using primarily the two paintings, the magic wand tool, the masking tool, and the transforming feature. I used the magic wand to select areas that I would then create my masks for. After that, I’d use portions of the painting and rotate/flip them via the transform tool to mask. Using the brush tool, I’d tune some minor errors or the edges of the masks so they were appropriately matched the line drawing and would convey the shadows in an effective manner.

This collage borrows from two paintings: Andrew Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” (1948) as well as Mark Bradford’s “Let’s Walk to the Middle of the Ocean” (2015). I chose both of these paintings for their textural properties, which I felt would highlight shadows and line differences in my chosen objects. Both also featured similar-enough color stories that would unify the final product. Additionally, both paintings were created nearly 70 years apart, with Wyeth’s realist/symbolist painting style juxtaposed with Bradford’s abstract expressionist style – I would hope that the combination of similarities in color and texture with stark differences in backgrounds and styles could blend together for a unique final product. I am very pleased with the result!
