Away From the Crowd – Multiple Portrait

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are all experiencing human relationships in different ways. The purpose of this project is to challenge students to think about how we co-exist with other people, how we maintain relationships over great distances, and the art of human interaction.

I created an image that incorporates multiple figures. My work includes hand-made and digitally manipulated imagery. I also considered symbolic qualities and levels of abstraction.

Part I – Gathering Sources

I collected imagery and made drawings from memory and observation.

I drew in my sketchbook a self-portrait from memory without looking in the mirror and a blind contour self-portrait looking in a mirror. I used photographs as a source and drew my sister and someone I admire. I also drew a friend I haven’t seen in a while, and the interior of an airplane because it is the last place I remember being where there were more than 10 people.

Part 2: Color Palette

I created three digital images using color palettes from the photos that I collected. I used Adobe Photoshop and created a palette of color swatches and created an abstract composition made of 1″ Squares.

Part 3: Sketches and Mock-ups

I created 3 different ways to visually approach my subject.

Part 4: Final Image

For my final image, I decided to cut 2 images and put them on the water.
