Vivian Maier was born in New York City, and lived there for most of her life until she moved to Chicago for work. She was born to foreign parents, so she traveled to Europe frequently during her childhood, as well as later in life. While in Chicago she was a nanny for many families. She was a very mysterious person, with her name and personality changing each time she began working for a new family. However, one consistent characteristic was that she was an obsessive collector, hoarding items such as newspaper clippings, mail, paint cans and railroad spikes. Although those who came across her collections believed that her items were useless pieces of garbage, when viewing her work, it is obvious that was a collector of both images and items. These items were later found among rolls and rolls of undeveloped film in storage lockers, which were eventually auctioned to John Maloof, who along with a few other art collectors is responsible for her posthumous recognition. Although those around her knew that she took photos, she never drew attention to her work, with most of her work going undeveloped and unprinted. Because people such as Maloof set out to develop and print her work, she has since become a prominent street photographer.
