Homework 7.23.2018: MOMI

Gregory Barsamian, Feral Fount, 1996

I was interested in this sculpture because it showed animation in a physical sculpture. On its own, each element of the sculpture is interesting, but when the strobe lights turned on, it was an interesting example of how animation works. It was interesting to see the progression of the moving image, beginning with animation using zoetropes, moving into stop motion, and then the development of using film. The use of strobe lighting is very interesting, as it explains the beginnings of the cinema that I have become accustomed to.

Compilation of photographs of film stars

Although the Museum of the Moving Image is primarily focused on video, it was interesting to see the numerous portraits of famous film stars. Although the images aren’t particularly special in terms of composition, they represent distinct moments in time based on the prominent people in culture. Despite the people displayed in the photographs have become irrelevant, the photographs continue to be relevant as they capture who these people were in their peak.

Compilation of vlogs

As I have grown up in the digital age, the genre of video blogs, or vlogs, have been pivotal in the way I have understood the world. Without having to travel away from Cleveland, I have been able to experience places all over the world via the lives of vloggers. Although vloggers have more recently been controversial, by testing the lines of what and what not to film, they allow viewers to experience things they would otherwise not be able to do. The videos highlighted in the museum are the quintessential examples of what I viewed for entertainment as I moved through puberty, as the people in them felt relatable to me and the experiences I was going through.
