Foggy Mornings (Studio Bridge Project 1)

In my Sensing the Past project, I wanted to compare my sense of touch between San Francisco and New York City. I specifically was trying to compare what my skin felt in the different cities. With all the fog in SF why arms were cold and my short arm hairs collected little droplets of water from the fog. When I first arrived in New York City, it was unbearably hot and humid and my arms felt sticky from the sweat and humidity. One day when I was walking I felt water drop on me and my instincts told me that it was going to rain but then I realized that I wasn’t back home in California so rain was unlikely at the time. Traveling in the summer in both cities is quite different in terms of the weather but pretty similar when it came to things that you would go sightsee. Using this difference and similarity, I chose 6 different images to compare, 2 of a famous bridge, 2 of chinatown, and 2 of the cityscapes. I thought these images would be able to capture each city well and allows for the viewer to gain a sense of the city in only a few images. Hopefully the viewer can get a sense of what it feels like in both cities.

My final video didn’t differ from the storyboard that I presented too much but I did make some changes. In order for the viewer to get a better sense of “touch”, I added more images of my jacket because in my seminar paper, I talked a lot about this black wind breaker my dad helped me choose and I attach a lot of meaning towards it. I also decided to edit the photos that I used for comparing San Francisco weather to New York weather. I used illustrator to add a lot of fog and gray to the San Francisco photos and then I added sunlight and white lights to the pictures of New York. As for the music, I originally wanted a soft song and then an upbeat song but instead I chose to use the instrumental for this song that I like because there are calm and upbeat parts of the song. I decided to use the instrumental instead of with lyrics because I didn’t want the lyrics to take away from my video. I think after reading my seminar paper, the viewer would get a better sense of how drastically different living in San Francisco and New York City are but in my narrative video, I made it more cheerful because I wanted a more playful approach on the comparisons.
