Self-Portrait

Artist: David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson
Lady Mary Ruthven
Year: 1845
Materials: Calotype, salted paper print
Photography

Although the lady isn’t showing her face, the photograph still shows her characteristics. Especially her clothing, it tells which time period she’s from, how she lives, and where she lives. She’s most likely from an upper class, European country. If she was in the lower class, she wouldn’t have been able to have the carved chair, patterned drapes, or her well kept outfit with her bonnet hat.

A facial expression isn’t needed to be able to tell a story. I can connect to the picture because I’m not great at expressing myself, and seeing that she doesn’t even need to show her face, the piece still tells a story. (The way she stands, her clothing, and the accessories.)
