final reflection

Everything is always being influenced. Like how we grow up, and learn what to do or what is appropriate in front of who and where. I feel like in these classes, we became more aware of how we think and slowly break away from the habit of unconsciously do things to being aware of observing and applying something in a different way. For example, studio made me more aware how just by observation and how fast people jump to conclusions. You can find out what an object or photo is saying. We don’t need to create something to show what it means, and just let it speak for itself. For example, in the gift giving, we looked at a collection of different photos that weren’t at all connected, but we were able to make a connection just by their pose, location, and whatever is in the photo. This reminded me of seminar how we took different readings, and were able to connect it with each other in paper a and b. In every class, we were also observing photos, objects, and words, and connecting it other information we know or found.

In our final paper and project, we were to look for our own research instead. It was difficult at first, because we didn’t know where to start, but like how we did the primary source exercise in class, I searched something broad (lying), and then more specific(motivation, compulsive lying, etc).Seminar helped me how to write better, and how we can rearrange where to put information can tell a different story. And when we read each others’ papers, we were able to see their format of writing, and listen to their feedback, to help write our own papers. I believe thinking about the peer review questions, rearranging the information like they’re puzzle pieces, and omission really helped me be able to write better than before.

Then we had to create something that literally meant what’s in the paper. In the beginning, I was going to do a sequence, for example, putting a video of someone saying they’re okay and showing a flashback, or showing someone denying they did something wrong to get out of trouble, or playing cards and showing a nervous habit. Instead, I made a video of short clips of nervous habits that could mean a whole bunch of things like there are so many reasons why someone may lie. Also, showing the motions in black and white really focus on the body, and so the viewers aren’t distracted by the other colors or background, and able to focus on the body language.
