Symmetrical Silhouette Ink Blot

Symmetrical Silhouette Ink Blot

In a group of three we explored the elements of symmetry and abstraction using India Ink, Sumi brush, and a sheet of large scaled paper.  The activity began by simply folding the paper on the vertical axis. As a group we took turns experimenting with ink and water by mixing the two to create different gray tones. In addition investigated a variety of motions with the ink by splattering, dripping, and painting. Communicating and working together in unity played a large success on the project when assisting one another. An example of this was folding the paper after each transfer with the addition of giving suggestions on how to add to the piece as a whole. We examined asymmetry by documenting 6 up close images (documented below) of the Ink Blot from the finished project. Then continued by discussing how the creation of different gray tones, lines, and splatter dots played a key role in how the up close images appeared. This exercise allowed us to explore elements of symmetry with the experimentation of ink in our class, Drawing and Imaging, with Professor M. Vote.
