This is a fashion ad photographed by a man named Steven Meisel. Steven Meisel is a photographer known for pushing the boundaries when it come to fashion editorials and ads. In this particular series Steven played with gender roles. As seen in the photograph both men and women are seen topless wearing heels and a skirt. Some could say this makes the photograph genderless do to the fact everyone is playing the same role showing no difference except the sex of each person. One could say that the men in the photograph are being portrayed as women do to the fact they are wearing heels and a skirt. This ad goes against the normal gender roles as a man because one could say that wearing heels and a skirt makes them more like a female than a male. “Gender is socially constructed and cultural created ad represented. Gender is something that people do. Applying makeup, shaving one’s face or one’s legs, and donning high heels or a face veil all fall within the realm of doing gender” (Kaiser 127). Kaiser supports the idea for this fashion ad that the men in the photograph are playing a female gender role that is been decided by society do the fact we associate gender roles with actions. With these men wearing makeup, heels, and a skirt society would say that they would be playing a female role.
