Going Home

“Chūn Yùn” (春运), almost like a ceremony, a period during or before the Spring Festival when most people in China start travelling back to home. It is a mass human migration on the planet. Some people would ride the motor cycle all the way from the east side to the west side. I want more people to know about “Chūn Yùn”, to know more about this aspect of China, to feel the desire of going home, and to relate it to themselves. And meanwhile, I hope people could find the strength or inspired by this desire to conquer the obstacles in their lives. I picked the colors from Chinese culture, embodied with the image I found of “Chūn Yùn”, over layered them to mimic the staggering going home scene. Home to myself is a rather abstract idea, because I’ve been always away from home. The bond between me and home has always connected by a phone. We can’t deny that oftentimes when we pick up our phones, with our families’ voices, we are home.

Reflection:

It was a special experience as my first time to present in a gallery. I really appreciated what Amanda pointed out about my personal relationship to home is different than others to their homes. I didn’t realize the disconnection before. While mine’s about home, and others relationship to their home is geographical. And it made me realize that I should be able to connect them together. The definition of home to myself is disconnected than the piece I presented. I need to think more about that. To be honest, I had a hard time with this project. If I have a chance to do this again, I will choose to interpret it using the relationship between me and my home. It always easier and more authentic when we do something that is closer to us. I also appreciate most of my classmates work on the exhibition. They inspired me a lot.
