Two Aphorisms Meanings Reflection – Christopher Breward – Foreword to Fashion Studies: Research Methods, Sites and Practices

  1. “Fashion is intensely personal, in the same way that poetry is intensely personal. It is a medium through which personal stories can be told, memories re-lived and futures foretold.”

I strongly agree with this point. Fashion extends from past and future. Fashion industry to me is a melting pot. There are countless fashion brands in the world with different designers, different tastes, and different styles. If we multiply the numbers of designers, tastes, and styles with different type of customers in the world, the number we get will be striking. The possibilities hide behind number are all kinds of decisions made due to personal reasons. We may buy the same stuff from the same store, but with different reasons; We can also go to two different stores to buy different coats and thinking that our options are the optimum one. Because fashion is a personal thing, we have different opinions on Gucci‘s Pre-Fall 2018 campaign. Some say it is a spectacular astonishing advertisement, others’ disapproval points out its using of Mai 68 can be a virtue signaling.

Fashion and poetry, from narrative to free verse, with all the poets’ different stories plus different styles, an intimate medium where people use it to reflect the past and to envision the future, are alike. We use fashion to make a statement, poetries to express our feeling and tell a story.

2.”Fashion does not define. It is instead a term that demands definition.”

To me, this aphorism said by Hazel Clark concludes the whole list. However, I think fashion does define, both of the people and the culture. Even though it is a personal thing, we have the general idea of fashion and the opposite of fashion because of the ideology and the globalization. We know what is fashion, and what is not.

We can’t give fashion a fixed definition within a few sentences. But it is undeniable that Fashion is an ever-changing trend. Because of it, this term does need a lot of definition, and the definition is constantly renewing. And it will never be defined by a few word, but infinite combination of words.
