Time Sound Art

I am the place where I am

The goal for this project was to make a sound piece that portrays the feeling of a place. I wanted to portray the meatpacking district because it’s probably my favorite place in New York. I was especially focusing on the hind-end boutiques, the fancy art galleries, and the many bars and clubs present in this part of town. I tried to make the piece convey a feeling of solitude, as if someone was surrounded by lots of people in a club but still feels alone. I also like how someone in the critique described my sound piece as “something I would hear in a museum.”

I used 6 different sounds which were all recorded in the meatpacking district and I was aiming to change the sounds as much as possible in order to not be able to hear what they originally were. The first sound in the piece is me blowing into a bottle of glass. I also used a sound of clapping, someone sweeping on the high line, the sound of bongos, me playing with rings in the chelsea market, and people in the chelsea market.

“Arrival in New York” diagrams:

I thought that trying to capture the volume and complexity of a sound piece as a drawing was rather difficult. It was hard to decide which parts were the loudest or the most complex, at least for me. I don’t think my drawings are very accurate but I tried.

Planning of my sound piece:

I thought that planning out my sound piece as drawings was helpful. It gave me a starting point for my piece. Even though the piece didn’t exactly turn out like the drawings, it guided my process of making them.
