Having lived right outside of Buffalo since I was 5 years old, the city became an important part of my life as I grew to appreciate its rich history and amazing community. My mother works out of Buffalo for a nonprofit that works with many other organizations in the city. Together these organizations strive to reduce violence, promote peace, and unite the community. As I got involved in her work through events and fundraisers, I met many Buffalo born and raised people who taught me love, tolerance, and peace. It was the acceptance Buffalo showed me that encouraged me to unapologetically be myself and embrace what makes me unique. This photo taken along the Erie Canal not only represents Buffalo’s history but it’s diversity and love. It shows me embracing my identity as a lesbian in a community that responded with nothing but celebration and love.
