Week 3 Update

This week I spent some more time researching structures and planning how i want to hang my textile. I decided I will be using some rope and 2 hoops of some sort to make a cylindrical canopy style tent that will hang from my ceiling above my bed. I also started collecting fabrics, sampling different materials, and combining materials. I’ve decided to work on individual patches of fabric at a time and then plan the whole composition later, before sewing any of the pieces together. This way, I can make sure I have a cohesive and balanced look for the whole tent lining. I started experimenting with a patch using various fabrics, including an old tshirt i had printed my art on, and hand sewing with embroidery thread.

I also tried a weaving technique with some recycled book cover paper that I plan to incorporate into a larger design.

I still have more research and planning to do with my structure- what materials I will use, measurements, and pattern pieces. I also want to continue looking for materials and unique ways of binding them to create more textures and a variety of techniques and appliques. This upcoming week I will also be cutting up old printmaking pieces to use and printing new pieces on top and on fabric.
