For my first set of 7 pieces, I drew portraits without lifting my pen and used the same 8 markers to color each one.
Because I was drawing my closest friends, and I love them all dearly, I couldn’t pick someone to leave out and did 8 pieces. I drew these using a photo for reference, and completing several rough drafts in pencil to refine the drawing. Marker was a new medium for me, presenting a slight challenge, but I’m happy with how well I was able to blend them and how saturated their colors are.
For my second set I drew food from life, exploring different ways of drawing contour lines. I painted them in with water color, restricting myself to one color in each panel the contour lines formed so that I had to rely more heavily on the lines and less on shading to convey depth.
Drawing from life was much more challenging than referencing a photo, but I found this set had a more lively, 3-dimensional quality than my first set because of this. I drew in pencil first, painted using a 10 color palette, and lastly went over the original line art in black marker. The “paint by number” technique I used gave the pieces, a graphic and mosaic quality that I am quite fond of.
