Time Archive / Time Mapping
I approach this assignment by trying to represent time by the environments that surrounded me, living in the city, it seems as is time never stops, I wanted to freeze time by taking photos all over the city, usually, the places I pass through frequently. For that same reason, I chose a grid with the fonts of black and a strong red, making the whole composition striking to the eye.
Chronophotographs
On this paired project we shot with a professional camera and a tripod, this helped the shots to be still, hence the background would not differentiate from the movement my body was moving. Definitely, this project was one of the most useful to develop my skills in photoshop, for some reason layering the photos and then taking the negative parts from it, and finding a body silhouette under it was entertaining by itself.
Sound Design for Future Films
This project took us probably the most time, it was based on making our own soundtrack using unconventional sounds, we all gathered more than 20 sounds each so we had a big variety of sounds we could choose from. Based on the sound, we had to create a video, and this was for the first time that I saw music first and the visual. Our video was supposed to follow the music, to represent it either in a literal or metaphorical way. Besides that, we also had to do a video for one of our peer’s music clip, which allowed us to see how different each person interprets sounds, how colors influence our perception of sounds and really show how differently we see the world.
Cinemagraphs
For the cinemagraphs I made 3 different gifs, just like my time archive project, I wanted to focus on the city and the environments that surround me. I chose two of the streets I always pass through and the main corridor in Parsons building. For this project My skills in photoshop were once again improved, it was interesting how we mixed the use of premiere pro with photoshop in order to do a 6-second video that somehow made a still image with a little bit of movement 10 times more eye-catching and engaging. On my cinemagraphs I made flags move around, a girl drinking water and a guy using his bicycle passing through traffic. Usually, gifs show cats and mediocre jokes, yet the isolation of a small and usually overseen elements of the city gives the photo something special, something nor a video or a photo can do or provoke on the spectator, it gives a sense of peculiarity and nostalgia.
Synaesthetic and Visual Music
The first step for this project was just to listen for 20 minutes straight in a space, I choose the cafeteria as it a place I frequently go to, yet I never had put detail attention to it. For the 20 minutes I focused on all detail I could gather from the things that surrounded me. This made my final visual music be very repetitive, there weren’t any striking sounds, most of them were monotonous. Most of the pattern I made was mimicking round shapes, representing the unpredictable yet repetitive sounds the cafeteria had.
Sound Logo
For the sound logo, we used the program garage band, at first I focused a lot on playing with the synthesizer and using different techniques in the piano. When I got comfortable using garage band I actually erased many of the tracks I had and started to mix some background music and juxtaposing it with clear rhythm beats. Overall my sound ended up sounding like a cute video game from an old game vibe.
