-What is an overview of the assignment?

Antipathy or Admiration is an open-ended assignment-Based on any concept and way of making, create an interpretation that reflects either a positive or an adverse reaction. All mediums can be used such as clay, graphic design, printmaking at home, or whatever one has access at home due to COVID 19/Quarantine.

-Supplies
1. Sketchbook
2. Your proposal for your reference.
3. Your final project in progress
4. Materials to continue the making process during class

-Proposal

3D Metal Hand
CONCEPT: The metal hand represents me, my hands, my thoughts, and my body. By letting little white candles burn and melt on the metal hands show the lack of free will I have.

PROCEDURE: The main structure will be made out of metal, modeled to resemble a hand shape. Then I’ll proceed to burn small candles on it.

IMAGE DEPICTION: The lack of free will. The relation between human flesh and metal.

MATERIALS: Metal strings of different colors and widths, and white birthday candles.

COLOR APPLICATION: Metal and copper.

-What was your process?

  1. First I started modeling the wrist with the help of a toilet paper cardboard piece of the middle.
  2. Then, I surrounded the cardboard tube with different metal strings
  3. Slowly, I started to fold the string on long pieces, this would be the base of the fingers.
  4. Then, I started folding more string around the “finger base”, to make it wider.
  5. Continued building the hands rapping strings everywhere, connecting the wrist with the fingers.
  6. Finally, to place the candles straight, t I melt the opposite side, the wax would help them stand as it works like glue.

-Reflection
I liked the experience of making this project, the way how metal stains, how easily you can bend it, but so SO hard to bend the corners, it was therapeutic and entertaining for me. This project reminded me of working with clay, there is something about the materials leaving dust, stains, or crumbs in one’s hands that makes it more personal somehow. This project also showed me how gratifying the process and the end result can be, as the “end result” was me burning the candles and letting the wax melt all over the hand. It likes to see how thoughts can be represented by art, birthday candles melting on a metal hand carries a different meaning for all, maybe no meaning for some, either way, I think that is the essence of my work. When I see my work, I see the hand, my hand, without free will, it can’t move, and I get to see how a usually cold material such as metal is juxtaposed by burning candles. For me, it’s clear how that shows me the lack of free will, me seeing it that way also shows the lack of free will I have, it doesn’t feel as “I decided” to see that when I see it, and the hand also didn’t choose to be built and burned.

ORAL PRESENTATION

” I am responding to the lack of free will I feel/have.”

I usually use contrast as a theme and as a technique in my art. I enjoy working with 2d/3d/geometrical patterns/organic shapes, trippy art forms, graphic design, industrial design, and packaging. My major is Architectural design and my future goal is to be rich, design amazing/eco-friendly houses, and do animal/social service for the rest of my life.
