Reflection:

• What did you learn about each neighborhood?

I have learned how there can exist a melting pot within the biggest melting pot; NYC. Gentrification is an issue for every neighboorhood which affects the working classes. The rise of housing prices is an issue for every neighboorhood in NYC, making completely different cultures and races come together to fight this persistent phenomenon. It’s very interesting to see how this issue affects everyone, because of their different backgrounds activism and art have helped to unite and collide these communities together for the better good. Naturally, some cultures mix and engage in incredible ways, mixed cuisines and different cultures implementing traditions from others, yet this can also create disparity and racial tensions.

The variety of races and cultures that NYC neighborhoods have has also completely transformed the infrastructures and visual architecture. The neighborhood that called my attention the most was Jackson Heights as Indian and Latin community melts into one. Both cultures are very prevalent in this particular neighborhood, it’s very interesting how the lack of space obligates them to interact with each other and how beautiful it is to see NY old architecture collide with Latin traditional colorful markets and the Indian distinct way of serving food aromatizing the whole neighboorhood. Jackson heights still carry the same fast pace life manhattan carries, nonetheless it is a community that is very respectful and aware of their surroundings as if they know they have to support and care for each other as a family.
