Drawing & Images Project 2: Drawing into Design (Final Version)

Introduction & About My Work

After discussions with my professor and thinking by myself, I finally decided to focus on Gothic Horror Art. In order to explore and study the charm of Gothic Horror Art, I went to two places. The first place was a Gothic second-hand clothing and jewelry store named Gothic Renaissance. Inside is a statue of the devil, very conspicuous. There are rows and rows of gothic garments, mostly black in basic hues, with repeated lace and holes, and lots of girdles, some long and some short, a few hundred. There’s a lot of skull-adorned clothes and masks and stuff like that, skulls are a common element of goth.

I went on to an art gallery named the Last Rites Gallery, by an artist named Darby Lahger, who has a collection of historical gothic items. Like a torture chair, with a lot of sharp thorns, and an iron mask, and a chain for binding. She also made her own candle-holders, which looked like Death’s head. She also has a wall full of skulls, on which there is a special colorful floating light, which has a special sense of beauty. She also designed her own wallpaper pattern, also a skull pattern. She has a lot of other art on display, very gothic, very good.

Then I went to a second-hand bookstore to found books about Gothic Horror Art, but I couldn’t find a specific book about this kind of art. I found a book about Gothic Tattoos, which told a lot about Gothic patterns, and I found a lot of books about Steampunk Art, which is a part of Gothic Art. In these books, I found some pictures of hats and watches, which were proper for my research.

Skeletons and skulls on the wall and the light can change colors.

The wallpaper designed by the artist herself, which is a skull pattern.

The candle-holders, look like Death’s faces.
