Introduction

The theme I am studying for this course is Gender. For this assignment, I created a grid of 36 images related to my theme on signifiers and another grid of 36 images on context and artworks by artists. I mainly found this images online (especially on some art websites and museums’ websites). and a few taken by myself in museums.

Relevance

These 72 pictures are all about my research topic: Gender. Particularly on women and feminism and LGBTQ and gender fluidity, which are the topics I have been studying and exploring for this course.  In the grid  “Context”, I looked for the works of many artists, which often showed people’s naked bodies and sexual organs, all to satirize or reflect their views on gender and sex. In the grid “Signifiers”, I focused on amplifying symbolic and gender parts in artistic works, so as to clearly show the creative styles and methods of those artists.

Reflection

  • What I learned about my topic through this image collection exercise was that when it comes to sex and gender issues, it’s a good idea to use the body (especially the nude) to express your opinions and ideas. Because nudity has a distinctive sense of intimacy and primal sense and contains the power of life, it is easy to stimulate people’s common feelings.
  • What was most challenging about this research as I was confused about what exactly is Signifiers and Context at first, and didn’t know what kind of pictures to put in these two grids.
  • In future works, I will try to use the body (especially the naked body) to express some of my ideas. How to use the body will also be considered by me, because the static body and the dynamic body will have different effects. I hope I can continue to study the relationship between body and gender to create works.
